Ceramic capacitors
Ceramic capacitors use a ceramic dielectric and are cheap and fairly stable over temperature and they are useful for tuning and timing applications.You may come across the following terms:
These refer to the type of ceramic
dielectric material used in constructing the capacitor.
NPO
is
stable over temperature and the most expensive but you'll need
it for creating a stable RF circuit i.e. one that does not drift off in
frequency when the temperature changes.
X7R
is
the next best having a 15% tolerance over -55°C to
+125°C
Y5V
has the following spec: -82%, +22%- over 30°C to +85°C
Z5U
has the following spec: +22% - 56% over +10°C to
+85°C
Note:
Normally you won't have to worry about the type but when you get to RF
design or accurate tuning then you may need to specify accurate
capacitors to ensure that the filter stays at the right frequency.
Note 2: Another accurate capacitor type to look at is polystyrene.
