PIC 16F84.The PIC 16F84 is the where it all started - it is the granddaddy of the PIC microcontrollers and it was the first well known microcontroller that you could reprogram in circuit using its internal flash memory.Because of this you can change the operation of the circuit by re-programming the chip using the ICSP interface. Although it is the most popular and familiar chip, today it is not such a good choice because there are other chips that offer more internal peripherals occupying the same pin space and costing less e.g. 16F628, 16F827, 16F88. Some of the features they offer are built in oscillator, built in USART, I2C more timers etc. the 16F88 even as I2C (slave mode) SPI and a built in ADC and it is cheaper than the 16F84. The PIC16F84 only has 1 peripheral a timer 1024k of program memory and 68 Bytes of RAM. That said you can achieve a great deal with this chip mainly because any missing peripherals you can either code as a software peripheral or attach as a serial peripheral e.g. a serial LCD only needs 1 pin to drive it.
